The process for creating a finished animation 'cel' is a very painstaking one. It involves a 3 step process to complete and involves specific steps and specific materials to create. They differ from normal artwork traditionally painted direct onto a canvas in that they were original used as the artwork to be included in the motion picture or cartoon of the time. It is referred to as a 'cel' as each artwork would represent one frame or 'cel' when filmed. The process for creating these framed cels is done in exactly the same way as the traditional animation cartoon cels would have been made at the time. The figures, characters and any subject matter that was intended to be a moving image on the screen is painted in a 2 step process on a clear acetate sheet (the outline is painted first on one side and then the acetate is 'flipped' and the colour is applied to other side). Acrylic is used for the flat acetate colouring as it dries to a thicker, rubbery consistency and is more flexible than other medium such as gouache. It can take up to 4 or 5 applications of colour in order to achieve the correct consistency to avoid the colour appearing transparent. You have to ensure one colour is completely dry before applying an adjacent colour to avoid colour bleed. The background is painted in the traditional way on art-board. The two elements of the acetate and the background are then married together and the acetate sheet is slightly raised from the background. This gives a very striking image with extremely vibrant colour and a sense of depth too.

Artwork Story: This is a pair of cels with consecutive imagery that sit side by side. I also had to create two identical painted backgrounds for this rather than two reproductions of one artwork because I wasn't happy with the quality of the reproduced image.
