And so the warmest hello to whoever is reading this. Welcome to my work in its many guises. If you are here..(and you obviously are aren't you!) then you must have an interest in the art of illustration.
Where do I start? I actually have no idea! Writing this is more taxing than creating a fine work of art. My artistic life has seen many stops and starts, all sorts of variety and all kinds of experiences. I was born and raised in Barnsley, moved away for a time to achieve the supposed clever stuff and then I moved back...how did that happen? After reaching my formative years studying art and history of art at Barnsley College of Art, I made the 380 mile break to Falmouth, Cornwall where I studied for my Illustration degree, graduating with honours - 3 years of my life I loved!
After a few years striving to find my way alone in the world of illustration fresh out of Uni with my own business called Inhaus Design Studio, I started working for Hallmark cards in the UK as an in-house illustrator (from Inhaus to In-house you could say!) Hallmark gave me some pretty cool stuff to work on and my break into commercial greeting cards illustration, including the chance to work on card lines by Andrew Brownsword and Deborah Jones (Forever Friends), Gordon Frazer (Country Companions) and a huge array of licensed lines through Hallmark from the likes of Walt Disney and Winnie the Pooh etc. I then went on to work for Britannia Cards again as an in-house and concept illustrator, before finally fleeing the cuteness nest to work freelance: something I've pretty much been doing ever since. In my time as a freelance illustrator I've worked with all kinds of clients, from private commissions to much larger corporate and editorial work for the likes of the World Wildlife Fund, the National Coal Board and Penguin Books to name but a few!
I work in a variety of media, but specialise mainly in pencil realism and gouache illustration work which is a water based paint similar to acrylic. I find gouache much more workable than acrylic after it has dried and like the way you can create effects with over-painting that can't be achieved with acrylic as successfully.
You'll see from my website that I have many different facets to my work. I have always liked to mix things up and keep the variety. My preferred work has to be my wildlife and general illustration. I love setting myself big challenges in my artwork, almost like a tour-de-force as it were to achieve something that I know will take a lot of pain (and time more often than not!), but will give me the gain of satisfaction and achievement at the end. Alternatively the greetings card industry gives you a totally different way of working which I also like - much more freedom and artistic license within the usual tight deadlines! I've also included some of the many other things I've taken on including private commissions for work such as animation art, caricatures and even tattoo illustration!
It's all artwork at the end of the day!
A special mention to 2 special housemates in my life too. To Dallas and Blue - my beautiful little Beagles who never fall out with me and always love me.....
